The “What is Memorial Day” curriculum is an educational resource designed for Kindergarten through 8th-grade students. It aligns with state academic standards in History–Social Science and Math for California, Texas, Indiana, and Florida. The presentation introduces the meaning and significance of Memorial Day, the concept of veterans, and the importance of service, honor, and community.
- Kindergarten–2nd Grade: Focuses on understanding community helpers, service members, and the values of selfless service, volunteering, and working together. Students learn basic vocabulary such as veteran, hero, honor, and memorial.
- 3rd–5th Grade: Encourages a deeper appreciation for military service members and their families. Students explore the different branches of the military, the meaning of patriotism, and ways to express gratitude. Key vocabulary includes Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Space Force, and sacrifice.
- 6th–8th Grade: Emphasizes honoring and preserving the stories of service members through research, interviews, and creative projects. Students develop empathy, communication, and presentation skills while learning about military structure, service experiences, and organizations supporting veterans. Vocabulary includes enlist, deployment, valor, PTSD, empathy, and Veterans Service Organizations.
